Michael's Manic Moment for the Month:  -
NIGHT IS DRAWING NIGH...
The time has been spun backward sixty minutes, and the days are getting much shorter, at least if you consider daylight to define a day. That means individual runners, training groups & club runs are all affected, especially during weekday evenings & more so if they are done on roads & streets.
So, let's talk about a few “must have” items your club members should have in their equipment bag or fanny pack over the next several months while twilight takes over our training routes:

First, I cannot stress enough the benefit of reflectorized vests, belts, straps, of flashing clip-on lights, or of any device that allows automobile drivers to see where you are (and ideally avoid you). Some clubs have ignored this advice, to their own peril. Also, please, please, please stress to your members it is their responsibility to look out for motor vehicles; the average driver on their way home from work, or on their way to soccer practice are focusing on everything else but the thinclad crossing the intersection.

Second, a cell phone with photographic capabilities will help in the event of a vehicular encounter or a meeting of the (un)mind(ful). Calling a member of the local constabulary rather than dealing with an angry driver is a good bet; you can give a description of the harrassing driver's vehicle and perhaps even a license plate number.

Third, carry some form of identification; something that has your full name, a valid address or telephone number, & what many law enforcement agencies call ICE – In Case of Emergency. Let someone know your route and estimated time of return, also.

If you absolutely have to run with a pair of headphones, please make certain to run facing traffic & keep the volume down low enough to hear what is happening around you. Also, if you can't run with a partner use common sense & situational awareness; stay in well-lighted areas & don't hesitate to call for help.
If you can't find the answer, you can always call (or e-mail) me, or Ken Bendy, or even Jessica at the national office. Official channels are always your best source of information.
Love you all. Have to run!
